[Urumqi International Airport]
  
           Located in Diwopu, suburb of Urumqi, capital of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, the airport is 16 km away from the downtown of Urumqi and is one of the five major airports of China. Urumqi International Airport covers an area of 4.84 million m2. With newly built runway 3600¡Á4, the airport can allow large aerobuses such as Boeing 757 to take off and touch down. The 110,000-m2 apron can accommodate over 30 planes. The extending project for the airport has been completed. Urumqi Airport was opened to foreign passengers in 1973, and has been the emergency landing ground for airlines to Europe and west Asia. In 2002, through Urumqi International Airport, 1.6734 million passengers and 35,000 tons of goods enter into or exit China. It has become the fifth largest airport only ranking after Beijing, Shanghai, Guanzhou and Shenzhen.
